Smith & Nephew Endoscopy was formed in 1995 to bring together the capabilities of two long-standing leaders in the fields of endoscopic instrumentation: Smith & Nephew Dyonics*, founded in 1968, and Acufex Microsurgical, founded in 1980. Today, Smith & Nephew Endoscopy offers equipment in three product lines:

  • Dyonics (arthroscopic blades, power instruments, and other devices)

  • Acufex* (manual instruments, soft-tissue fixation devices, and drill guide systems

  • Images (endoscopic visualization)

The growth of Smith & Nephew Endoscopy mirrors the growth of the most dynamic and fascinating surgical specialties. Endoscopy - from "endo," (beneath the surface) and "scope" (see) - allows surgeons to operate through coin-sized openings in the body, rather than large incisions. Using miniaturized telescopes, fiber-optic light, and special instruments, surgeons can reduce operating time, trauma, and post-operative discomfort. Patients recover in days rather than weeks; operating rooms function more efficiently.

The needs of patients and health care payers have driven the growth of endoscopy, but it continues to rely on sophisticated technology. That's why Smith & Nephew Endoscopy figures so prominently in the evolution of this surgery and its exciting new applications.
